Adjacent to the plot (west) is a stunted woodland of red oak and red maple. To the north is a stunted Populus clone. To the east is a cottongrass peatland similar to GRAN.4. South is more stunted woodland. The area is a TNC preserve, north of a wilderness area. It is very isolated; however, the viewshed to the north is marred by Mount Storm power plant.;Open sunny herbaceous community, somewhat moist. The community is most likely a marginal wetland, with a few FACW species and some soil mottling. The hydrology is fed by upland seepage from the gently sloping saddle on the plateau. The soils are shallow. The area was historically logged and burned.
Representativeness
Small patch of tall herb community dominated by grass-leaved goldenrod, flat-topped aster, and wrinkle-leaved goldenrod. Most of the goldenrod-aster types we have seen were on alluvial floodplain, but this one is on the gently sloping side of a plateau..
